ABOUT DR. IAN NORTHEAST
Dr Ian Northeast, a chiropractor based in Melbourne, Australia, is passionate about aiding his clients towards moving and living well. “Movement is life” so goes the saying and is a significant focus of Dr Ian when working with his clients. This can refer to both the quantity and quality of the movement. The aim of this being efficient, functional, powerful and comfortable movement.
Dr Ian has completed a 5 year university degree in human chiropractic and a 2 year postgraduate study in Animal Bio-mechanical Medicine.
In his down time Ian is a passionate horseman as well as enjoying learning and practicing quality movement through gymnastics strength training, triathlon and traditional weight training. Coffee and Lune croissants are his weakness.
Chiropractic has been applied to many different species and out side of humans, horses and dogs are the most common. Horses have been used by humans for millennia, despite this, they did not evolve for this purpose. As such, when we ride or work the horse, we are placing a stress on their body for which it was not designed to handle.
Dr Ian believes that because of this stress placed upon the equine frame, through their spine, that all horses worked under saddle or pulling a cart should be routinely checked. This should be performed by a qualified chiropractor or Animal Bio-mechanical Medicine Practitioner.
Chiropractic type treatments by a qualified Animal Bio-mechanical Medicine Practitioner are specific, gentle treatments. In Dr Ian’s experience and a surprise to some of his new clients is that a horse adjustment is often as gentle as that used with a human.
With the moto of Movement is Life, a significant portion of Dr Ian’s practice focuses on improving the quality and quantity of movement his patients experience. For the triathlete with repetitive movements, efficiency of motion is paramount. For the horse rider, symmetry of leg and rein aids as well as balance of weight distribution is essential. For the gymnastic type athlete, full range of motion of joints and muscle ring pattern and activation is required. These factors are also make for a happy human when applied to the desk athlete, the person putting themselves at stress every day driving their desk.
Dr Ian enjoys putting this same moto into play with children; recreational and professional athletes/sports people through assisting with movement quality and efficiency; those in their mature years wishing to maintain or improve where they currently are.
Dr Ian has first hand experience in equestrian sports, short and long course triathlon, Crossfit and gymnastics strength training and draws on this experience when looking after his clients.
